    Ah YouTube, it’s there for us when we need it most, showing us how to change a tyre, poach an egg or teach us a brand new skill. But when it comes to making our own awesome YouTube content, how do you break through the noise?

    There are so many content creators on the platform now, it can be a little intimidating when it comes to getting started and getting your videos noticed. But do not fear! Getting your YouTube content seen is no where near as difficult as getting your written content seen.

    Want to know exactly how to give your video the best chance possible of getting those all important views? Go ahead, get stuck in!

    Why bother with YouTube SEO?

    I know, you’ve already spent ages filming and editing and uploading and now I’m telling you you’re going to have to do more work?! Just for this one tiny video?


    Just like a new blog post, your YouTube video needs a bit of care and attention to fly freely from the nest. If you don’t support it getting off the ground, it’s just going to crash and be forgotten by the world.

    Imagine making a film, but you don’t advertise it and you only share it with 5 of your closest friends, would it get thousands of views? Would it get nominated for awards or win an Oscar? No, because you didn’t tell the entire world about it!

    Making sure your YouTube content is ‘optimised‘ for the words that you think people will type in to find your video, means that YouTube will be able to link your video with those words.

    Example: You’ve made a video about how to make poached eggs, you want people looking how to make poached eggs to find your video, so you ‘optimise‘ for the words ‘how to make poached eggs‘. That means, when someone types in those words into YouTube, they’ll find your video and you’ll be helping them with their egg related issues! 

    Treat your YouTube video like a blog post

    When it comes to promoting and sharing your YouTube videos, think about it exactly the same as a blog post.

    You’ve just hit publish, what’s next? Do you share it on your Facebook page? On your Twitter feed? Do you email it to people?

    Whatever way you would get your blog out to your readers, do the same for your video. Why not write an accompanying blog post to go with the video? Giving you even more content to share and more chances of your video being seen.

    You give your video a title (just like a blog post), you give it a description (same as an introduction to a blog post), you throw on a few tags (same as you would when choosing tags and categories for your blog post). See how it’s pretty similar?


    What keywords should you target?

    So now you know why you should spend a bit of time on your YouTube SEO and how you should be promoting it, but how do you know what keywords you should be optimising your video for? How do you know what questions people need answering?

    This is where keyword research comes into it. Using a few tools, you’ll be able to see how many times a month a certain word or question is searched for. Yup, it’s like being psychic!

    Tube Buddy and Keywords Everywhere are your best bet, plus, if you can get access to Google’s Keyword Planner, that’s even better!

    Keyword Planner and Keywords Everywhere will tell you how many times a keyword or phrase is searched for.

    As you can see, when I type in ‘how to set up Twitter Ads‘ my video pops up 2nd in the results (thank you very much!) but the Keywords Everywhere tool also tells me how many times a month that phrase has been searched for. The ‘volume‘ is 10 searches a month, you can see it underneath the search bar at the top there.

    Over on the right, you can see Tube Buddy in action. This doesn’t tell you the actual search amount, but it does give you an idea of how often that term is searched for within YouTube and how much competition you would have for it. The higher the competition, the harder it will be to get your video to the top of the results pages!

    Using these tools can help you put a list of either video topics together or just a list of keywords you can use to help your video move up those search result pages.

    How do you target them?

    Ok, now you have the actual words or questions you want your video to pop up for when someone searches for them, so how do you go about making your video associated with those words?

    The easiest way to do this is to follow this list and make sure you’ve ticked them all off once your video has gone live:

    • Make sure your main keyword or the question your video is answering is in the title (it’s helpful when people know what the video’s actually about)
    • Make sure the keyword or question is within the very first paragraph of your description
    • Make sure the keyword or question and variations of it, are included in the tags
    • Make sure your thumbnail name has your keyword or question within it
    • Turn on the captions and ensure that they are correct
    • Add your video to a playlist that also has your keyword or question in the title
    • Once the video is live, comment on the video with the keyword or question, heart your own comment and pin it to the top

    Obviously there is a lot more to YouTube SEO than just adding in a few keywords. The engagement rate, view count, like count and share count all come into play as well. That’s why the marketing part is so important, you need to get those first few people viewing your content, liking and sharing in order to get the most out of all the work you’ve put in.

    It’s a long process, but trust me, if you can get your video to the top of YouTube search results, the likelihood is that it will also be featured highly in normal Google search results, see below:


    If you put in the time and effort, you will see results! Answering a frequently asked question is your best bet for driving a huge amount of people to your content and all it takes is one successful video to kick things off in a big way!


  • Should you choose Squarespace or WordPress for your website?

    So you’re looking to take a big step and get yourself one of those snazzy websites you hear everyone talking about, but you’re confused by the big Squarespace or WordPress debate!

    Don’t worry, I know it’s a hard decision, I’ve had to help people make it before, myself included. That’s why I am here, the fairy godmother of marketing some might say. By the end of this article, you’ll be enlightened as to which platform you should whip your credit card out for.

    Hold on, what’s the difference between Squarespace and WordPress?

    I’m so glad you asked! There’s a couple of differences between Squarespace and WordPress, but I’m going to try and explain it as simply as possible because I don’t have all day.

    Squarespace is your all-in-one solution. Hosting, domain, theme, SEO, the whole shebang is taken care of with one swift click of a button.

    WordPress is a CMS (content management system) that requires external hosting, so you have to go to someone like tsohost and say hey, can I park my website in one of your parking spaces? and they go, yeh ok, here’s some space for you bro!. Then you have to go in, set up WordPress then choose a theme, either from their library or downloaded from somewhere like Creative Market.

    Can you see why I often steer those less web savvy towards Squarespace?



    Why would I go with WordPress when it’s so complicated?!

    Well don’t be put off by the many steps involved in setting up a WordPress website, it can be extremely worth it in the long run!

    If you know that you want to build and develop your website as you grow or as your business grows, then it’s the perfect option. It can also be the cheaper option of the two if we’re talking monthly payments!

    For as little as £2.99 a month, you can get basic hosting for one website. However, if you also want a cool, snazzy custom theme, then that can set you back about £30-£40. However, this is just a one-off payment so it’s not too bad in the long run.

    WordPress also gives you more control of the actual HTML and CSS of your website, which, if you are a seasoned developer, is a blessing. It also allows you to play around with SEO optimisation a little more, as well as being able to add custom widgets and plugins to improve functionality.


    Ok, so WordPress sounds pretty awesome. So why would I choose Squarespace?

    Well, if you are a bit of a newbie to this managing a website game, or you’re running a mega-successful solopreneur/freelance business that needs all your time and attention, then having this all-in-one option is your best shout!

    Squarespace has a phenomenal support and customer service system. Their endless tutorials and FAQ sections mean that there is no question you can ask that hasn’t already been answered. Their support team will get back to you very quickly about any issues and then they’ll fix em all up for you!

    It is also a great platform for creatives, as their themes are perfect for portfolio style websites. Their e-commerce feature also means you can quickly and easily set up an online shop attached to your website, no messing about with complicated code, just whack it up.


    Ok, so you’ve answered the big questions, but I’m still none the wiser!

    I remember the good old days when I would sit under the skylight in my dad’s house to film videos for my beauty YouTube channel. I loved that channel, it’s actually still going believe it or not! But I wanted to chat you through how to create a YouTube channel for you and your business!

    Having a YouTube channel is a lot of work, there’s no ifs, ands or buts about that. It takes a lot of time and effort to create good quality videos, edit them and throw em’ up on YouTube, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be considered.

    My one true love is video, I can sit for hours watching landscape videos on Vimeo and if there’s a video of a product on an e-commerce site, I’m around 80% more likely to buy it, because you have distracted me with moving images.

    What should you think about before publishing your first video

    There are many things you should think about before pressing publish on that very first video you’ve been working on for forty days and forty nights. The main being the name and focus of your channel.

    In order to gain loyal subscribers, your channel should have a catchy name that is easy to remember when users are typing it into their search bars. You should also have a clear theme, whether that is art, short films, photography or maybe just a lifestyle/vlogging channel. A clear theme gives your viewers an idea of the type of content they can expect and help them make a decision as to whether you’re worth following!

    Also, have a think about what the topics of your videos will be. If you’re using YouTube as a promotional marketing tool for your business, then think about the questions your customers have and how you could answer them in a video. If you’re just doing it for the top bants, then have a think about what you would enjoy watching and how long you watch YouTube videos for, to get a better idea of running time.

    All these points will give you the perfect idea as to what videos to start dreaming up!


    Create your channel art

    Now you know what your channel is going to be about, it’s time to get your design hat on. Make sure to get your channel art done and dusted, you can use programs such as Canva for this kind of thing.

    Make sure it’s not too busy and gives visitors a clear idea of the tone and target audience. For example, if you go to my YouTube channel, you’ll see that it’s a fun little cartoon office with pastel colours throughout. This is to show that my audience is predominantly female, I do videos about business and online stuff and I don’t take myself too seriously!



    Fill in your biography

    YouTube optimisation is a thing people! Make sure you are including keywords into your channel’s biography section, in order for your channel to pop up in search results. So many people leave this blank or put a simple sentence and they are massively missing out on an easy way to optimise their channel for YouTube searches.


    Set your defaults

    To save you bucket loads of time, make sure to set your channel defaults. This section is so you can include important information in every video you upload, without you having to put the same stuff in manually time and time again.

    This can be stuff like your website address or social media links, all listed in the video’s description. You know when you watch a video and the description has all the deets, where to find out more, links to the Twitter account la dee da dee da? Well, I bet you that is all done through channel defaults, cause ain’t nobody got time for that!


    Publish your first video

    Publishing a video really couldn’t be easier. Simply press the upload button and you’re on your way. Make sure to fill out your title, description, and tags and if you’re really feeling sexy, why not add a cheeky end card to encourage people to watch more of your videos?


    Market the crap out of it!

    Now that your masterpiece is online for the world to rest its beady little eyes on, you can just walk away as it gets billions of views!… SAID NO ONE EVER!

    It may seem like all these big YouTubers went viral overnight, but the truth is, they worked damn hard to promote themselves in the early days of YouTube. This meant getting on social media and chatting to their subscribers, asking questions within the video and interacting with comments, teaming up for collaborations with other YouTube stars.

    Having a YouTube channel is like trying to flog any other kind of product, you have to sell it to people who may not even know it’s there.

    There are so many people uploading to YouTube these days, that if you don’t start shouting in the crowd, nobody is going to hear you. You need to get pushy, message people who you think might be interested in your content and generally just shout loud and proud about your new creation!
