YouTube is one of the biggest search engines on the internet, in fact, it is the second largest search engine after Google! But how do you start a successful YouTube channel and start to reap the rewards of this widely used tool?
It’s definitely not as easy as it used to be. Back in the day, hardly anyone was using YouTube as their own personal TV network. Most videos were funny cat videos or road traffic accidents. As soon as people realised the potential for this online video platform, things really started to take off.
Like a normal TV show, the success of your channel depends on the content you put out there. If your content isn’t great to start and turns people off, it’s never going to reach the dizzying heights that you’re dreaming of.
You can’t just think of a piece of content right then and there, film it, throw it on your YouTube channel and then expect it to get millions of views, turning you into an online mega star. There are many different aspects to making a channel and a video work and it’s hard! Especially now that everyone is trying their hand at YouTube!
What equipment do you need?
The biggest and most widely renowned YouTubers use the very best equipment, but guess what, most of them don’t own any of it, they rent it or are loaned it by camera/sound companies that want them to use their stuff.
Whaaaat? I know right?!
The truth is, to start off, you only need 2 things, a HD camera and a tripod. These can be budget or mid-range (see below for some examples!) but the most important thing is that your camera can record video in 720p or above. You can even do it on newer iphone models because their cameras are amazing!
So here are a few example cameras and tripods you could pick up on a budget, that will help you make awesome quality videos.
- iPhone 7/7 Plus or above
- Sony a5000 (this is my vlogging camera and I LOVE IT!)
- Canon 600d DSLR (this is now seen as outdated, but I’ve had mine for nearly 7 years and it is still giving me awesome image quality)
- GoPro Hero 5 (I use this for when I’m doing outdoor or travel vlogs, the quality is unbelievable)
- Any budget tripod! (Such as this one. If you’re just doing sit down vlogs at home then this is all you need)
- Gorilla Pod (Perfect for vlogging or getting a shot in an awkward angle, also compact so great for travelling)
How to get your video out there
Getting your video out into the world is relatively easy, getting it the attention it deserves is a whole other ball game. Just like any piece of content, you need to make an effort to get it in front of the right eyeballs and that doesn’t happen automatically.
Once you’ve created and uploaded a video, start to look for online publications that might be interested in publishing your video as part of an article. Have a Google and see if you can find any blog posts talking about the same subject as your video, then ask them if they’d like to include it as an extra resource.
A lot of users will come through social media, so make sure you are promoting the video on all of your social channels, ask people to RT or share if they also enjoyed it!
If your videos answers questions or addresses anything that could be seen as a strong start for conversation, you could also have a look at online forums and post your videos as answers to online questions.

Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration
Many of the biggest YouTubers that are around today, got that way because they started to collaborate with each-other, opening up their content to a new audience that is in their target range. e.g. Zoella collabed with Sprinkle of Glitter, who had a similar audience, who then discovered her and her channel etc.
It’s not just about tapping into someone else’s audience, collaborating with YouTubers in the same or a similar niche, can often lead to the best content.
People watch YouTube videos for one of 2 reasons, to be entertained or to learn. Watching people collaborate can be hugely entertaining or if those 2 people are using their video content to teach you about a subject, you will also have the benefit of an extra person’s knowledge, making your video even more credible.
Don’t be afraid to drop someone an email and just say ‘hey, I love you video content and I was wondering if you wanted to collaborate with me on a video about XYZ’. What’s the worst that could happen? They could say no, in which case life goes on!
Understanding YouTube SEO
Something that a lot of new YouTubers overlook is YouTube SEO. The act of making your channel and video content easy to find in search results. This is the long game though, nobody gets overnight results from SEO.
If anyone promises they can do that for you, run away, they are lying to you.
When I first started my channel, I made sure that all my videos were carefully optimised for their respective keywords and even though it didn’t make much difference at the time, I now have a number of videos that have made their way up the search engine results pages. One of them even made it onto page 1 and as a result, it now has over 35,ooo views!
